George Leonhardt

Services for George Leonhardt, 83, of Groton, will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 8th at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Groton. Rev. Craig Grams will officiate. Burial will follow in Bates-Scotland Cemetery under the direction of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton.

Visitation will be held at the chapel from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.

George passed away June 4, 2012 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen.

George Heinrick was born on the family farm near Verdon on February 22, 1929 to Hans and Ella (Bahr) Leonhardt. He attended 4 different Country Schools in Henry Township and later went to a Welding school in North Dakota. On September 18, 1949, he was united in marriage to Delores Shannon in Groton. Together, they made their home near Groton, where they farmed and raised livestock. George also worked for the ASCS office as a field reporter who did measuring of fields.

George was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Groton. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family and grandkids. He was meticulous by nature and excelled at mathematics.

Celebrating his life is his wife of 62 years, his children, Daniel Leonhardt of Powell, Wyoming; Eretta (Donald) Dargatz of Enemy Swim; his siblings, Delbert Leonhardt of Groton; Lorene Blocker of Ashley, North Dakota, eight grandchildren: Brenda Kennedy, Shelley (Loren) Steiner, Melissa (Horacio) Figueroa, Karla Smith, Dylan Deaver, Amy, Addie and Katie Leonhardt. 10 step-grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law Betty (Phil) Brantner and many nieces and nephews

Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, Floyd along with brother-in-laws, Norman Shannon, Billy Shannon; father-in-law, John Shannon and mother-in-law, Mary (Hutchinson) Shannon. Honorary Casketbearers will be all of George’s Nieces and Nephews.

Casketbearers will be Tyler Steiner, Matt Oswald, Loren Steiner, Tim Waldner, Neil Wagner, Landal Leonhardt, and Perry Blocker.
