Services for Calvin Farmen, 64, of Groton will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 1st at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Groton. Pastor Elizabeth Johnson will officiate. Burial will follow at Fron Lutheran Cemetery, Roslyn under the direction of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton.
Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., at the church on Saturday, and will continue until the time of service.
Calvin passed away on Monday, May 27, 2013 at Golden Living Center, Groton.
Calvin Jerome Farmen was born in Webster on June 22, 1948 to Arthur Maurice and Clara R. (Hanson) Farmen. He was baptized at Roslyn Lutheran Church and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Bristol. Calvin started school in a country school, Liberty District 123. He attended the rest of his grade school in Roslyn and Bristol schools. He graduated from Redfield High School in 1966. Calvin attended Northern State College for two years, majoring in English with a minor in Speech.
Calvin enlisted in the US Air Force and began active duty on December 27, 1968. He served overseas in England, as a maintenance analysis specialist. He received his honorable discharge on December 26, 1972 at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California.
Calvin worked various jobs in Redfield before moving to Groton in 1992. He assisted his brother, Clayton, at the meat market and was custodian at the Groton School for over 20 years. He took early retirement in November of 2012, due to his illness.
Calvin enjoyed bowling and playing cards. He really enjoyed beating his nieces and nephews in Pinochle. Solving the crossword puzzle in the daily paper was his goal every day.
Survivors include his sister, Judith "Judy" Schaunaman of Roslyn; brothers, Errol (Beverly) Farmen of Midwest City, Oklahoma; Keith (Gloria) Farmen of Redfield; sister-in-law, Martha Farmen of Groton and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his sisters, Maureen (Merrill) Holler; Alice (Lowell) Morehouse, brothers, Clayton Farmen and David Farmen and two nieces, Deanna (Holler) Hoffman and JodiLynn Schaunaman.
Honorary Casketbearers will be all of Calvin's nieces and nephews.
Casketbearers will be Clayton "Butch" Farmen, Dale Farmen, Heath Farmen, Tommy Farmen, Mike Holler and Glen Schaunaman.
