Charlotte Grieben 98, of Groton died Sunday February 5, 2012 at Golden Living Center in Groton.
Her funeral will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday February 11, 2012 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ferney, Rev. Lloyd Redhage will officiate. Burial will take place at a later date.
Visitation will be Friday 4-7 P.M. with a 7 P.m. prayer service at the funeral home.
Charlotte Annabel Hemen was born on February 17, 1913 to Floyd and Lilian (Castle) Hemen at Britton, South Dakota. She was baptized June 1, 1913 at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Langford, South Dakota. On March 31, 1929 she made her Confession of Faith at the Community Church of Custer. She attended school in Custer, graduating as valedictorian in 1931. After graduation, she continued her education at Mankato Commercial College. Shortly after college her grandfather Joseph Castle passed away and the family moved back to Marshall County. In the mid-1930s she moved to Aberdeen, South Dakota and began he career at the Brown County ASCS office and eventually became the general manager.
On April 25, 1959 she was united in marriage to August Grieben. The couple made their home on the Grieben family farm southeast of Ferney, South Dakota. After many years at the ASCS office, Charlotte retired from that job to help August with their farming operation. Charlotte and August were very active in Farmers Union. August passed away October 18, 1982. She continued to reside at the farm until 2002, when she moved to Golden Living Center in Groton, South Dakota.
Charlotte was the family matriarch who took great pride in taking care of the family. She was gifted with many talents including meticulous record keeping, leather tooling, and making jewelry for a gift shop in her younger years out in Custer. She enjoyed gardening, farming, playing cards and board games, reading, cooking, baking, and hosting dinners for family and friends.
Charlotte passed away at Groton, South Dakota at the age of 98 years, 11 months, and 19 days.
She is survived by one sister Lorna Dahms of Bend OR, and many nephews, nieces, cousins and close friends and neighbors.
