Clair Cowan Obituary

Services for Clair Cowan, 83, of Groton will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 7th at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Ferney. Rev. Lloyd Redhage will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in the Conde City Cemetery under the direction of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton.


Visitation will be held at Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel on Sunday October 6th, from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.


Clair passed away October 3, 2013 at Golden Living Center in Groton.


Clair Robert was born on November 14, 1929 in Verdon to Clare and Marguerite (Bahr) Cowan. He attended school in Groton and following graduation, he enlisted with the US Air Force. On June 7, 1951, he was united in marriage with Lorraine Pusl in the Groton Catholic Church. He served in the Korean War from 1951-1953. Upon returning home from the service, they made their home on the family farm near Verdon. In 1979, they retired and moved to their home in Groton.


Clair was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ferney where he was confirmed. He belonged to the Groton American Legion Post #39 and the VFW in Aberdeen. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, working in his shop, fishing, hunting, gardening, working in the yard, checking out Fritz's, playing cards , and enjoyed driving the country side to see family and friends.

Celebrating his life is his wife, Lorraine and their children: Peggy (Jim) Spencer of Ulysses, Kansas; Rob (Pam) Cowan of Stillwater, Minnesota; Rick (Donna) Cowan of Casa Grande, Arizona, his sisters, Donna Mae Klabo of Sioux Falls; Norma (Dick) Helmer of Andover and grandchildren: Joseph Spencer, Thomas Whitworth, Justin Cowan, Lindsay Cowan, Lance (Carrissa) Cowan, Andy (Haley) Cowan, Josh Cowan, James Cowan and great-granddaughters: Cecilia, Naomi and Brecklyn and the many other relatives that loved him dearly.


Preceding him in death were his parents.


Honorary Casketbearers will be David Anderson, Jerry Bonn, Gilbert Hinkelman, Eddie Opp, Don Hoops and all of his card playing friends and members of Legion Post #39.


Casketbearers will be Justin Cowan, Lance Cowan, Andy Cowan, Josh Cowan, James Cowan and Gary Klabo.


In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Golden Living Center of Groton or choice of the family in care of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Home at 112 North 3rd St., Groton, SD 57445.
