Memorial services for Dennis Johnson, 83, of rural Groton will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 17th at Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton. Rev. Bill Duncan will officiate. Inurnment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen under the direction of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel.
Visitation will be held at the chapel from 9-11 a.m. on Monday.
Dennis passed away January 12, 2011 at Golden Living Center, Groton.
Dennis E. Johnson was born on January 22, 1927 at Britton, SD to Clarence and Harriet (Carlson) Johnson. He was raised on the family farm south of Claremont, SD. This is the area where he attended the Johnson Grade School and continued his education at Groton High School. He then joined the farming operation with his parents and his brother, Darrel. After his brother's death, he took over the family farm, which he continued to operate until August 26, 2004, when he entered the Beverly Healthcare Center in Groton. He then moved to Rosewood Court in Groton and on November 2, 2007, he returned to the Golden Living Center in Groton, where he was residing at the time of his death.
Dennis was a life time member of the Augustana Lutheran Church, rural Claremont, where he was baptized and confirmed; a board member of Scandinavian Mutual Life Insurance Company, Langford, SD, Sinclair Oil Company, Groton, SD, Brown County Farmers Elevator, Claremont, SD, and Northern Electric Coop, Bath, SD.
In his younger years, he enjoyed pheasant hunting, being on the "Sippel Oil Company" bowling team and playing softball and kittenball. He also enjoyed watching old Western movies and Sunday afternoon football.
Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Joycel and Monte Goodrich, Aberdeen; nephews, Darrel (Julie) Goodrich, Mina Lake; Gray Goodrich, Austin, TX; Roger (Diane) Johnson, Groton; Tom Johnson, Galena, Alaska; Butch Johnson, Center City, MN; and two nieces, Diane Ehrenberg, Rapid City, SD and Barbara Morris, Britton, SD.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his three brothers, Lambert, Lewis and Darrel.
Denny's friends and relatives will rejoice that he has been released from 7 ravaging years of the dreaded disease, Alzheimer's.
