Memorial Servcies for Edith (Sippel) Hughes, 90, of Groton will be 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 2nd at Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton. Rev. Bill Duncan will officiate. Inurnment will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen under the direction of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel.
Edith passed away Saturday, January 29, 2011 at Avera St. Lukes Hospital, Aberdeen.
Edith Annie Sippel was born on August 20, 1920, on the family farm near Groton, to Albert and Bertha (Johnson) Sippel. She attended country school first through eighth grade. She later graduated from Groton High School in 1938. In 1939, she attended nursing school at Luther Hospital in Watertown, South Dakota for 2 A½ years. She then finished her degree at Minneapolis General Hospital and University Hospital, graduating in 1942. She worked at Luther Hospital until June 1945. She then entered Army Nurse Corp on June 25, 1945, and stayed until October 1946. She enjoyed spending time at the Second Lieutenant Officer's Club during her service years. She then worked at St. John's Hospital in Sacramento, California, from 1946-1948.
In 1948, she returned to Minneapolis to work at the University Hospital and the Methodist Hospital in St. Paul, Minneapolis. She lived with her brother, Emery, in Minneapolis from 1948-1949. In 1955, she met Francis James Hughes, and they were united in marriage on April 28, 1962. They made their home in Billings, Montana where Edith worked as an operating room nurse until she retired in 1982. Edith was a member of the First English Lutheran Church and was involved in her church group and card clubs. Frank and Edith enjoyed going out for lunch on Sundays and spending the afternoon at home. She was also an avid reader. They lived in Billings until Frank's death on April 20, 2010. They were married 48 years. After Frank's death, Edith moved back to Groton and lived at Rosewood Court until the time of her death. She was able to spend much time with her brothers, nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
Celebrating her life through memories are her brothers Emery Sippel and Ralph Sippel, both of Groton; niece Meri (John) Erickson; nephew Marc (Franne) Sippel; nephew Monte (Sandi) Sippel; niece Marjae (Dan) Schinkel; niece Mendy (Jim) Jones; niece Melissa (Neil) Gilbert, all of Groton; and great nieces and nephews Seth Erickson, Evan Erickson, Sydney Erickson, Camille Sippel, Anthony Sippel, Alyssa Sippel, Madison Sippel, Sarah Sippel, Danielle Schinkel, Jasmine Schinkel, Anthony Schinkel, Emma Schinkel, Marlee Jones, Austin Jones, Emerlee Jones, Brooklyn Gilbert, and Carly Gilbert; sister-in-law Hilda Sippel.
Preceding her in death were her parents, brothers Lester and Arnold, infant sister Irene, sister-in-law Marlys Sippel, and niece Marcia Sippel.
