Services for Gwynne Jones, 88, of Groton will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, January 20th at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Groton. Pastor Elizabeth Johnson will officiate. Burial will follow in Groton Union Cemetery under the direction of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton.
Visitation will be held at the chapel from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday and will continue prior to services at the church on Thursday.
Gwynne passed away January 15, 2011 at Avera St. Lukes Hospital, Aberdeen.
Gwynne was born to Richard E. and Claribel (Hughes) Jones on January 15, 1923 in Aberdeen. He attended Plana School and later, Groton High School. Gwynne farmed with his dad until 1944, when he took over the farm. On June 14, 1949, he was united in marriage with Dawn Herron. Together they made their home and living on his family farm northeast of Bath, SD. Gwynne retired in 1986 and sold the farm in 2004, when they moved into Groton.
Gwynne was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and had served as a Deacon for several years. He was also active on the Soil Conservation Board and on the Township Board for 10 years. Gwynne was an assistant 4-H leader and drove school bus in Groton following his retirement. In earlier years, he enjoyed hunting and always had a large garden.
Celebrating his life through memories are his children, Dana (Rose) Jones of Watertown; Owen Jones of Cleveland, Ohio; Kim (Arnie) Schock of Fargo, North Dakota; and Karla (Jan) Torkelson of Los Angeles, California. Gwynne is also survived by six grandchildren, Keith (Katie) Jones, Belynda (Jim) Weber, Matthew Jones, Michelle Jones, Stacey (Trevor) Hone, Jenny Schock and five great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents and his wife, Dawn.
Casketbearers will be Ron Ringgenberg, Alan Davis, Larry Akkerman, Ron Westby, Gordon Locken and Steve Smith.
