Services for Herron Smith, 86, of Groton and formerly of Andover, will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 21st at the United Methodist Church, Groton. Rev. Rob Moorlach will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen under the direction of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton.
Visitation will be held at the chapel from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.
Herron passed away May 17, 2009 at Golden Living Center, Groton.
Herron Samuel Smith was born on November 9, 1922 in Waxhaw, North Carolina to Julius Malcolm & Mary Kathryn (Crump) Smith. He attended school in North Carolina and following graduation he enlisted in the US Air Force. Herron served in Guam before his honorable discharge in 1947. On July 8, 1947, he married Elaine Drayer in Union County, North Carolina. The couple made their home in Rockham, Ashton, Bruce and Andover, where Herron managed grain elevators for South Dakota Wheat Growers. After 32 years, they retired in Andover.
Herron was a member of the United Methodist Church and had been active in the Methodist Men. He also belonged to the Two-Cylinder Club and had been honored as a 60 year member of the Andover American Legion Post #258. Herron had served on the Andover Fire Department, WEB Water Board, and several school and town boards in the various communities that he had lived in. He enjoyed pheasant hunting, fishing and gardening. He especially liked growing pumpkins each year and sharing them with family and friends.
Celebrating his life through memories are his four children, Mike (Susan) Smith of Ft. Pierre; Rick (Carolea) Smith of Watertown; Barry (Trudy) Smith of Andover; Mark (Sue) Smith of Shakopee, MN, two brothers, Tommy Smith and Bobby Smith of North Carolina, nine grandchildren, Brett (Carmen) Smith, Anne Smith, Alexys (Kent) Thorson, Christopher Smith, Ryan (Kandi) Smith, Rene Smith, Melissa Smith, Melinda Smith and Chelsea Smith and five great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife and twelve siblings.
Casketbearers will be Herron's Grandchildren.
