Janice Bahr Obituary

Janice Bahr (79) loved the Lord and went to be with Him for the new year on Saturday, January 1st.  She died peacefully at Avantara Groton nursing home where she lived for four years.

Janice Maynard was born January 28, 1942, at St. Lukes Hospital, Aberdeen.  She was the only child of Arthur LeRoy and Margret (Nelsen) Maynard.  Janice was baptized and confirmed at Aberdeen First United Methodist and attended Simmons Elementary and Central High School graduating in 1960.  She is a graduate of Stewarts School of Hairstyling.

On June 27, 1970, she was united in marriage to LeRoy Bahr, and the couple made their home on the family farm near Groton where they were blessed with two children, Daryl and Lori.

Janice spent many days on her grandparents’ farm near Richmond, SD sometimes riding the train 10 miles from Aberdeen.  At times, all 14 cousins would gather there, and many chores and and some mischief was shared.  They romped on the haystacks, swung on the rope in the barn loft and chased the geese that wandered around freely on the property. Her five uncles always had a building project or were constructing a mechanical device of some sort, and the cousins were given lots of learning experiences.

Spending time on her grandparent’s farm gave Janice the love of the soil and landscapes, and when she and LeRoy married, she was well suited for farm life. She was actively involved with keeping up the farmstead showing her landscaping and mowing skills.

When her daughter, Lori, started Road Warrior Photography, Janice continued to seek out the wide-open spaces, riding along for photography assignments.

Janice loved the people at Avantara and participated in many activities with bingo becoming her favorite hobby.  Her family is grateful for the caregivers who took such good care of Janice over the years and thankful for Avera Home Hospice who walked with her in the last months.

Celebrating her life is her daughter, Lori Bahr, of Groton and several cousins.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, LeRoy and son Daryl.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Friday, January 7th at Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton with Rev. Lloyd Redhage officiating.  Burial will follow at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, Ferney, SD.
