Kay Frances was born on July 16, 1941 in Huron, SD to Phoeba (Mulhollan) and Francis Morrissey. She attended St. Theresa's Catholic grade school and graduated from Huron High School in 1959. She attended Presentation Junior College in Aberdeen and later received a degree from Northern State University in 1984.

On April 8, 1961, Kay married Richard Harold Donovan of Hecla. Richard's teaching and coaching career had the couple living in Aberdeen, Delmont and Highmore before moving to Groton in 1969. They lived in Groton until 1987, then moved to Mitchell where they stayed until 1995, returning back to Groton. Kay worked at North Central Special Services in Groton, Puetz Construction in Mitchell, and together with her husband managed Rosewood Court in Groton until her retirement in 1996.

Kay was an active member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Groton. She enjoyed traveling, reading, crossword puzzles, collecting and sharing music boxes, sending inspirational cards, and attending her children and grandchildren's activities. Grandma Kay loved spending time with her grandchildren and had a special relationship with each one of them.
