Services for Lorraine Bartz, 89, of Flower Mound, Texas and formerly of Groton will be 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 27th at the United Methodist Church, Groton. Rev. Sheila Richards will officiate. Private family burial will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen under the direction of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton.
Visitation will be held at the church from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.
Lorraine passed away January 22, 2010 at Lake Village Rehab Center in Lewisville, Texas. Her wit, wisdom and great faith were always with her.
Lorraine H. Strom was born in Groton on November 3, 1920 to Charles and Hulda (Johnson) Strom. She attended school in Groton. After earning her degree in Elementary Education at Northern, she taught for 35 years. The schools included Ferney, Conde, Redfield and rural schools such as Sunshine School in West Hanson. She was honored with being named the Redfield Teacher of the Year in 1978. The theme of Lorraine's Retirement Celebration was "To Teach is To Touch a Life Forever". Lorraine united in marriage with August "Bud" Bartz on September 2, 1940 at the Strom family farm near Groton. Together they made their home on the Bartz family farm by Ferney until 1965 when they moved to Redfield. Bud passed away in 1976. In retirement, Lorraine resided in Groton. Lorraine continued to touch more lives while living with her daughter and husband in Texas for the past 5 years.
Lorraine was a member of the United Methodist Church in Groton and served in the UMW. She was also a member of Groton Senior Citizens, PEO, Delphian Club, South Dakota Education Association and Retired Teachers. Lorraine was active in the Aberdeen Area Literacy Council where she did volunteer tutoring. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, crossword puzzles and calligraphy. Lorraine also liked to watch game shows, musicals and spend time with family and friends.
Grateful for having shared in her life is her daughter, Bette (Terry) Meister of Flower Mound, Texas, two grandchildren, Nathan Meister of South Fork, Colorado and Adam (Nikki) Meister of Lewisville, Texas, two brothers, Glen (Dianne) Strom and Donald (AlJean) Strom both of Minneapolis, her sister, Doris Zoellner of Groton.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, four brothers, Carl, Clarence, Lloyd and Marvin, her sister Alice Weith and five half-brothers, Elmer, Emmanuel, Paul, Raymond and Howard.
Casketbearers will be Nathan Meister, Adam Meister, Richard D. Strom, Bill Zoellner, Robert Strom, Tom Strom and Jerry Schley.
Memorials can be directed to the Groton Rescue Squad, Aberdeen Area Literacy Council or the Groton United Methodist Church.
A Memorial Service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Lewisville, Texas on February 6th at 2:00 p.m
