Services for Lourene Pulfrey, 93, of Groton and formerly of Claremont will be 10:30 am, Thursday, January 15th at Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton. Rev. Bill Duncan will officiate. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery under the direction of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton.
Visitation will be held at the chapel from 2-7 p.m., Wednesday and will continue prior to services on Thursday.
Lourene died January 10, 2009 at Golden Living Center, Groton.
Nina Lourene was born on May 15, 1915 to Robert Earl and Nina (Winter) Pulfrey in Claremont, SD. She attended school in Claremont, graduating in 1933. Lourene attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen and graduated with a B.S. degree. She taught in various schools in Brown and Marshall Counties. She moved to Arlington, Virginia and worked in the Pentagon for several years in Washington, D.C. She then returned to teaching in Fairfax County, Virginia. Lourene dedicated her life to the teaching of young children and was awarded an "outstanding educator" award upon her retirement.
Lourene returned to the Pulfrey family farm near Claremont after her retirement and lived there until moving to the Groton Golden Living Center in 2004.
Lourene belonged to the NEA and the local education associations. She belonged to the Aberdeen Chapter of DAR and was involved with judging the Good Citizenship essays submitted annually by area schools. Lourene was a member of the Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women in Claremont. She enjoyed her membership in the Claremont Gourmet Club.
Survivors include two brothers, Robert E. (Flora) Pulfrey of Port Charlotte, Florida and John W. Pulfrey of Claremont; one nephew, Robert Pulfrey of Bel Air, Maryland; six nieces, Ellen Hershey of Albany, California, JeanMarie (Paul) Burtness of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Janet-Lea Harris of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Beverly (Ray) Mack of Watertown, Shirley (Al) Breaw of Tucson, Arizona and Linda (Marshall) Janisch of White Mountain Lake, Arizona.
Lourene was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and brothers-in-law; Mildred (Dale) Ziegler, Genevieve (John) Ziegler; two nephews, John Pulfrey, James (Charlotte) Pulfrey; one niece, Nola Ziegler; and two sisters-in-law, Alta M. Pulfrey and Ruth Pulfrey.
