Max passed away August 22, 2019 at Avantara Groton.

Mary Maxine Ann Hearnen was born to William and Alvira (Wettstein) Hearnen on February 27, 1929 in rural Turton, SD.  She grew up in the Conde area and attended Conde High School, graduating in 1947.  Max continued her education at Northern State College in Aberdeen, graduating with a teaching degree in 1949.  She taught for several years at country schools.  While teaching in the community, she met and married her husband of 26 years, Floyd Bertsch.  Together they were blessed with a daughter.  The couple later moved to California, where Max taught for the California School District.  While there, she was blessed with another addition to the family, a son.

Max later moved to Colorado and then to Arizona where she worked as a Secretary for the State of Arizona until her retirement in 1998.

Maxine enjoyed life, loved to sew, knit, crochet and sing.  She was a devoted member of the Catholic Church.  Every year, she could hardly wait for her “snow birds” to arrive so they could go out for breakfast after church and catch up on old times/reminisce with her older brother, Bill and his wife Patsy.

Her smile and wittiness will be deeply missed by all.

Grateful for having shared in her life is her daughter, Kathy Bertsch of Anaheim, CA, her brother, William (Patsy) Hearnen of Conde, two sister-in-laws, Donna Hearnen of Conde, Karen Hearnen of Fargo, ND, her nephew Bill, Jr. (Penny) Hearnen of Conde and several other nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death are her beloved parents, her son, Norman Bertsch, four brothers, Bernie, Tom, Jerry and Norb Hearnen, his sister, Blanche Warner, brother-in-law, Herb (Shad) Warner, two sister-in-laws, Delores Hearnen, Betty Hearnen and a nephew, Barry Hearnen.
