Services for Maurice Hitchcock, 86, of Conde will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 7th at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Ferney. Rev. Lloyd Redhage will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton. www.paetznick-garness.com
Visitation will be held Wednesday at the chapel from 4-8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
Maurice passed away May 4, 2009 at Avera St. Lukes Hospital, Aberdeen.
Maurice J. Hitchcock was born on December 29, 1922 to Russell and Emma (Fredrickson) Hitchcock in Conde, South Dakota. He attended school in Conde and enlisted in the US Army on March 26, 1943. Maurice served in the Pacific Theater and was awarded a Purple Heart. After his honorable discharge in December of 1945, he returned home to Verdon and began farming. On June 1, 1946, he united in marriage with Arlowene Dobberpuhl in Groton. Together they made their home near Verdon.
Maurice was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ferney. He also belonged to the Donald A. Lewis American Legion Post # 148 in Conde. Maurice enjoyed playing card games on the computer and working in the garden. He spent many hours woodworking and creating furniture pieces for his family. In earlier years, Maurice enjoyed fishing with friends and family.
Celebrating his life through memories is his wife of 62 years, Arlowene; three children, Dennis (Diane) Hitchcock of Minnetonka, MN, Mavis (Bob) Rossow of Conde, Marilyn (Tim) Thum of River Falls, WI; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his sister, Thelma Rossow of Las Vegas, NV and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, one daughter, Marlis Hitchcock; two brothers, Earl Hitchcock and Lyle Hitchcock and one sister, Hazel Sombke.
Honorary Casketbearers will be All of Maurice's Friends.
Casketbearers will be Roni Dobberpuhl, Rodney Dobberpuhl, Allen Dobberpuhl, Jerry Rossow, Kevin Thum and Derek Miles.
