Melvin Henjum Obituary

Mass of Christian Burial for Melvin Henjum, 88, of Conde will be 10:30 am, Friday, May 23rd at St. John's Catholic Church, Conde. Father Bill Osborn will officiate. Burial will follow in St. John's Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton. www.paetznick-garness.com. Military honors will be provided by the Conde American Legion Post #148.

Visitation will be held at the church from 4-8pm on Thursday with a wake service at 7:00pm.

Melvin passed away May 19, 2008 at Golden Living Center, Groton.

Melvin Norval Henjum was born on February 16, 1920 to Nels and Malena (Grinde) Henjum in Crandall, South Dakota. He was baptized and confirmed at the Lutheran Church in Crandall. Following school, he enlisted in the United States Army. Melvin served in WWII from 1942-1945 in the EuropeanTheater. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to South Dakota and began farming. He was united in marriage with Leone Brown on August 10, 1951 in Conde.

Melvin was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Conde. He was honored as a 60 year member in the Conde American Legion where he had also served as commander. He was also a lifetime member of the V.F.W. in Turton. Melvin served on the Benton Township Board and the Board of Directors for the Conde Farmer's Elevator.

Grateful for having shared in his life is his wife, Leone, one son; Joseph (Kristy) Henjum of Conde, and three grandsons; Matthew Henjum and fiancAC. Melissa Schraeder, Kyle Henjum and Brad Henjum.

Preceding him in death were his parents, one brother and a half-sister.

Casketbearers will be Edward Klapperick, Norman Smith, Gary Hearnen, Tom Bertsch, Ron Schneider, and Floyd Smith.
