It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Patricia Catherine Hearnen, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, who passed away on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at Avantara Nursing Home, in Groton, South Dakota. Patricia built a life full of faith, family, friends and service.
Patricia Catherine was born on January 14, 1927, in Conde, South Dakota, to Adolph and Margaret (Pemrick) Koenig. In her early years, she attended country school and later, attended Conde High School, graduating in 1945. She was united in marriage to William Edward Hearnen on July 1, 1946, in Conde, South Dakota.
Patsy was an avid golfer, she enjoyed sewing (she made many of the girls’ clothes while they were growing up), cooking and baking (especially fried chicken, potato salad and caramel rolls), annual Spring and Fall shopping trips to Minneapolis to shop with her daughters, crafts, woodworking, mowing the lawn, working in the fields with Bill. She and Bill enjoyed dancing, playing cards and fishing. Together they had traveled all over the U.S. and abroad, while wintering in Arizona for 30 winters. Patsy was raised in the Catholic faith and attended St. John’s Catholic Church in Conde and later St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Groton, South Dakota. She also was very active in the American Legion Auxiliary.
She gave Christmas holiday baking goods to neighbors throughout the years, handwritten cards, and was the kind of listener that made people feel understood. Her family will remember her strength, her generosity, her prayers, her family holiday dinners, her quick wit, the fact that she never wanted to be fussed over and the steady love that shaped their lives.
Celebrating her life is her husband, William, their children, Bonnie Hearnen, Maple Grove, MN., Barbara Hearnen, Maple Grove, MN., Brenda (Alan) Lubbe of Hanover, MN., William (Penny) Hearnen, Conde, S.D.; grandchildren: Daniel (Anne) Lubbe, Megan (Favio) Soto, Erin (Kyle) Chapman, Tyler (Kelly) Hearnen, Katie (James) Husby, Tara Schumacher and 17 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents and her sister Magdaline (Albin) O’Connor.
Honorary Casketbearers will be all of her grandchildren.
Casketbearers will be Chad Hearnen, Lon Hearnen, Austin Hearnen, Matt Henjum, Kyle Henjum and Brad Henjum.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 13th at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Groton. Father Gregory Tschakert will officiate. Burial will follow in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Conde under the direction of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton.
