Richard Oliver Obituary

Services for Richard "Dick" Oliver, 69, of Groton will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 1st at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Groton. Father David Janes will officiate. Private family burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the Groton Union Cemetery under the direction of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton.

Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to services on Monday.

Dick passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, February 25, 2010 after a long battle with heart disease.

Richard Bruce Oliver was born on January 9, 1941 in Aberdeen to Robert and ImoJeanne (Healy) Oliver. He attended school in Groton (class of 1958) and continued his education at the University of South Dakota and Northern State University. Richard united in marriage with Sandra Hanson on April 18, 1960 in Watertown and together they made their home near Groton. They would have been married for 50 years this April. Dick raised crops, cattle and quarter horses while farming with his father and brother. He retired early due to poor health.

Dick was a former member of the Groton Methodist Church, 4-H, Masons and the Elks.
After raising his 3 daughters, Dick enjoyed being a "grandpa" to his 5 grandsons, granddaughter, and great granddaughter. They were his pride and joy. He also loved collecting "Oliver" toys and antiques as well as other farm memorabilia.

Celebrating his life through memories is his mother, ImoJeanne of Aberdeen, his wife, Sandra of Groton, three daughters, Rebecca (Berkman) Hong of Los Alamitos, California, Lynn Lutter (Mike) Tabbert of Little Rock, Arkansas, Cindy (Carl) Teer of Sioux Falls, six grandchildren, John Dylan Lutter, DVM, Joseph (Jade) Lutter, Jesse Miller, Isaiah Teer, Jared Hong, Julia Hong and one great-granddaughter, Regan Artz Lutter. Dick is also survived by his brother, Jack (Maggie) Oliver of Groton and his sister, Bette (John) Cochran of Mayville, New York.

Preceding him in death was his father, Robert, and one grandson, Ross Joseph Lutter.

Honorary Casketbearers will be all of Dick's friends.

Casketbearers will be John Dylan Lutter, Joseph Lutter, Jesse Miller, Jared Hong, Todd Oliver, Chad Oliver, Berkman Hong, Mike Tabbert and Carl Teer.

Memorials can be directed to the Groton Community Fund, PO Box 467, Groton, SD 57445. The family requests no flowers please.
