Vernon R. Walter

Vernon Walter, 84, of Groton, SD died Thursday, February 04, 2010 at Avera St. Luke's Hospital, Aberdeen.

Funeral services will be 11:00 Monday, February, 8, 2010 at United Methodist Church in Groton with Rev. Bill Duncan officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 3:00 to 5:00 Sunday, February, 7, 2010 at the United Methodist Church, Groton. Visitation will resume again one hour prior to the services at the church on Monday.

Vernon Ray Walter was born April 18, 1925 in rural Pierpont, SD to Merle and Ethel (Henderschott) Walter. Vernon attended Riverside Country School and graduated in 1943 from Groton High School. Following graduation he served in the US Army.

Vernon married Jean Ann Voigt on September 18, 1947 and they began farming and dairy operations.

Vernon enjoyed bowling, golfing, playing cards, and being with family and friends. Vernon & Jean were instrumental in the formation of the James Jimmies Baseball Team by their support and donation of land for the baseball field.

Vernon was a member of the United Methodist Church, a 50 year member of the American Legion and the Groton Masonic Lodge, and a charter member of the Olive Grove Golf Course. Vernon and Jean enjoyed many years being snowbirds in Mesa, AZ.

Grateful for having shared his life is his wife Jean of Groton, SD, sons Merle (Nancy) Walter of Arlington, SD, Terry Walter of Pierre, SD, Robert (Vicki) Walter of Groton, 11 grandchildren, 16 great grand children and two brothers; Donald (Joy) Walter & Jack (Helen) Walter of Groton, SD

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother Alice and one brother David.
